NASWA in Action: Understanding Veterans' Priority of Service

Workforce and veteran service staff often request to learn more about veterans' priority of service. This ensures that veterans and other eligible persons can get access to services before non-veterans. This applies to all employment and training programs funded by the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL).

Veterans' preference is a separate benefit for veterans. It applies to the hiring process and is often used in federal employment as well as by private employers in 39 states.

NASWA is helping workforce organizations better understand the differences between the two. Lori Adams, Senior Policy Advisor, led trainings across the country this summer, including:

• a breakout session at the 13th Annual NASWA Veterans Conference
• a presentation for the Jobs for Veterans State Grants (JVSG) team for Job Service North Dakota and Iowa Workforce Development
• a session at America’s Warrior Partnership’s 13th Annual Symposium
