Highlights: December Board and Committee Meetings
NASWA held meetings for the Board of Directors and Policy Committees in Marco Island, Florida December 3-5, 2024.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The NASWA Board of Directors held a one-day meeting led by Board Chair, Joe Barela (CO). The Board received updates on policy committees, heard from President and CEO, Scott B. Sanders and a partnership report from the National Labor Exchange (NLx). NASWA teams presented updates on the Open UI Initiative. The Board also discussed legislative priorities and heard a post-election update from John Colbert of Capitol Hill Partners. The next Board of Directors meeting will be on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 in Washington, DC prior to the Winter Policy Forum.
VETERANS AFFAIRS
The Veterans Affairs Committee’s first meeting of the Association Year had a great turnout with more than 30 members in attendance in Marco Island, FL. In addition to updates from USDOL VETS, along with presentations from Hire Heroes USA and AmeriCorps, the group met with members of the National Labor Exchange Steering Committee. There were also several robust discussions on topics such as shared positions and how the states have implemented provisions of VPL 05-24. Jeffery Dent shared the latest from the Marketing subcommittee, and a new working group was formed to develop a standard operating procedure template (thanks to Jennifer Taylor from MO for the idea.) Members volunteering for that project are Jennifer Taylor (MO), Nakita Mongar (AK), Sacha Stadhard (MA), Mark Ortega (NJ), Jeffery Dent (TN), and Eric Bermudez (IL). The committee’s next in-person meeting will be Tuesday, July 8, 2025, prior to the 12th annual Veterans Conference. Virtual meetings are held monthly on the second Thursday of each month.
UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE (UI)
The December UI Committee Meeting was attended by more than 30 members who engaged in roundtable discussion and shared state practices. Members heard updates from the USDOL and NASWA's Integrity Center, UI ITSC, SIDES, and Open UI departments. The Committee will meet next on April 22, 2025 in Salt Lake City.
