National Labor Exchange (NLx)

Did you know?

The National Labor Exchange (NLx) Research Hub makes job posting data publicly accessible, allowing state agencies to incorporate labor demand data into their labor market information (LMI) products. State LMI practitioners, with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, have already used NLx data to generate data products, reports, and public-facing products. Kentucky, Minnesota, and Ohio participated as pilot states— providing a roadmap for all states to access and use the NLx Research Hub and make job posting data a public good.

The recently completed NLx Research Hub pilot program requested each state to identify use cases for NLx data and explore how the dataset could be incorporated into their existing or new LMI products. Each state explored these use cases and developed resources that leverage NLx jobs data:

  • Kentucky integrated NLx jobs data into their Job Search Launchpad Dashboard, incorporated it into education and workforce reports, and mined the dataset to analyze benefits by occupation/industry.
  • Minnesota explored various analysis use cases for NLx jobs data such as identifying key job listing attributes, developing a green/clean-energy jobs taxonomy, integrating NLx jobs data into job vacancy surveys, and conducting in-state regional analysis.
  • Ohio prioritized end-user tool development and integrations by creating a top employers/top jobs dashboard and connecting it to the state job bank using NLx jobs data.

During the NASWA Summit in September 2022, states shared their experience with the NLx Research Hub and dataset and presented their final integrated products.

The NLx Research Hub collaborates with states, academic, nonprofit, and private organizations to create an open ecosystem of real-time and historical labor market information. This helps forecast trends in work and education, and enables the development of tools for jobseekers, learners, employers, training providers, and policymakers to make informed decisions.
