Extension of EUC Remains Uncertain as Senate Returns Next Week from Recess
As Congress returns to Washington, D.C. next week from its Martin Luther King Jr. Congressional recess, the Senate is set resume negotiations on an extension of the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program, which expired at the end of December.

Debt Ceiling Limit to Come Earlier Under Treasury Estimate
The Treasury Department on Wednesday moved up its estimate of when so-called “extraordinary measures” to avoid breaching the debt limit would be exhausted from early March to late February.

Registration and Hotel Reservation Deadlines for 2014 NASWA Winter Policy Forum Fast Approaching, Make your Reservations Today!
State workforce officials and unemployment insurance professionals planning on attending the 2014 NASWA Winter Policy Forum (WPF) should register for the Conference before the early registration rate of $475 ends on Friday, January 31st. After the early registration period, general registration will be $525 for NASWA members. The 2014 NASWA Winter Policy Forum will be preceded by the NASWA Board of Directors’ Meeting on February 19, 2014, which all state administrators are encouraged to attend.

Massachusetts Secretary of Labor Goldstein Set to Depart Agency
Joanne F. Goldstein, Secretary, Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, will leave her post at the end of January to become an associate vice president at Northeastern University. Goldstein will be replaced by Rachel Kaprielian, currently the head of the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Unemployment Insurance Initial Claims and Continued Claims Increase
The U.S. Department of Labor reported for the week ending January 18, 2014 seasonally adjusted unemployment insurance initial claims increased from the previous week’s revised figure.
