Government Remains Shut Down; Potential Default on October 17th
As the federal government inches closer to the 14th day of the government shutdown and the deadline for raising the nation’s borrowing limit approaches next Thursday, October 17th, members of Congress have offered a series of proposals aimed to break the Congressional deadlock, however the situation remains very in-flux.
Results from NASWA’s Surveys: Impact of Federal Government Shutdown on UI and Workforce Systems
NASWA sent two surveys to states last week to gauge the impact of the federal government shutdown on state workforce agency funding for operations of the unemployment insurance (UI) and workforce programs. The preliminary results from the surveys show many states have sufficient funding to continue operations in both UI and Workforce programs for the month of October, with a majority of states either not considering or are undecided about furloughing or layoffs of staff.
BLS Employment Report for October Likely not to be released due Federal Shutdown
In a statement released last Friday, October 3rd, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicated it would not be releasing the Employment Situation for September because of the government shutdown.
NASWA Report on the use of Wagner-Peyser Act Funds Highlights the Importance of the State Role in the Workforce System
In June 2013, NASWA’s Employment and Training (E&T) Committee conducted a national survey on the use of Wagner-Peyser Act (W-P) funds.
NASWA Publishes Report on Sequestration and its Impact on the Workforce System
NASWA recently asked its Employment and Training (E&T) Committee to participate in a survey to detail the impact of sequestration on the workforce system. With nearly a 76 percent response rate among the states represented on the Committee, the survey shows that sequestration impacted, staffing, job center access, and services and programs.
Unemployment Insurance Initial Claims Reach Six Month High; Continued Claims Decrease Slightly
The U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) reported for the week ending October 5, 2013, seasonally adjusted unemployment insurance initial claims increased from the previous week’s revised figure, reaching the highest levels since March.
